Goodbye Pledge Trainer, Hello Vice President!

As the year wraps up I bid farewell to being a pledge trainer to 118 freshman Tri Delts. It is hard to believe that our year of preparation is over and their six weeks of pledging are done. The journey was worth every second that Betsy Kate, Rebecca and I poured into this job. In the end we were so proud of every single girl and their commitment to Tri Delta.

The adventure began in January, but not until this fall semester did things really pick up. It all began on bid day when we welcomed them with open arms as they ran down Sorority Row to the Tri Delta House.
78 text messages the day of bid day
Welcome to our six weeks where we traveled with our phone chargers always
The best group I could have ever asked for

The three of us held weekly pledge meetings teaching the baby dolphins about Tri Delta nationally and specifically the Chi chapter here at Ole Miss. Through this process I learned so much.

I learned to put others before myself.
I learned to make time for others because sometimes people need you more than you need your own personal time with Netflix.
I learned how important communication skills are.
I learned the success of social media by running the baby dolphin's Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.
I learned that sometimes you can't fit everything into one day.
I learned that sometimes your great ideas don't always work out.
I learned and was affirmed daily of how truly great my friends are.
I learned that I love loving on others.
I learned that in a short amount of time someone can impact your life and you can impact others.

Whether these 118 girls know it or not, they changed my life and impacted me in every way possible. While they seem to always be thanking me, I need to thank them in return.
You all mean the world to me and I'm sad to see the time as pledge trainer pass. Betsy Kate, Rebecca and I could not have been happier during these six weeks with y'all. You all made every meeting worth it, every swap more fun and made initiation very rewarding.

Although I am sad to pass along the pledge trainer title, I know the friendships that were built during these six weeks will last and I can't wait to watch them grow.
The door to pledge trainer is shutting, but the door to being Vice Preside of Tri Delta has now been opened and I couldn't be more excited!

Thanks again baby dolphins! You made my year special and I'm thankful for each and every one of you. Also, thank you to the two other pledge trainers, our trio was perfect!

Defying the stereotype

When I first decided I was going to attend the University of Mississippi, I did not know where this journey would take me. In high school Ole Miss was seen as some srat star, Lilly Pulitzer campus. I knew I wasn't like that, I didn't own any Lilly dresses, Tory Burch sandals or David Yurman rings, but I knew I was meant to go to Ole Miss.

Let me go ahead and say, before you stop reading now, Ole Miss is not all about the latest Lilly clothing line, Tory Burch sandals or anything you read on Pinterest as "sorority girl."

What I've learned here at Ole Miss is to be yourself. Everyone on campus wears the same thing to class every day essentially, yet when you look closer everyone remains who they truly are. Whether you're noticing the crazy socks underneath someones converse, a ring that perfectly describes their personality, or maybe they're defying the oversized t shirt & Nike shorts memo all together.

The girls looking to come to Ole Miss that are in high school get a false representation and view of what this incredible place is like. We don't all wear cowboy boots with a designer dress and pearls. We don't all listen to country music and drink the days away. We don't wear monogrammed floppy hats and carry a Louis Vuitton.

In general, I have remained true to myself in college. I am still, somewhat, the same person I was in high school. What has changed though is my heart. This school that gets such a "party" reputation has made me a sweeter, more caring and kind hearted person that the person I was in high school.

I give people more chances, I do not judge so quickly, I thank the Lord every day for these people in my life and I owe all of this to the opportunities Ole Miss has given me.

My advice to incoming freshman is to take a step back. Don't judge a school by its stereotype. Ole Miss is so much more than a party school with a beautiful campus. It is a home to many for 4 years, some more because they don't want to leave, and this home has impacted every single life.

With five semesters behind me and only three full semesters ahead, I have realized so much about this place I call home. Even though I am only here for 4 years, these years have been crucial to me and who I am as a person.

Yes, most of my friends love to shop. Some of my friends wear Lilly. Tory Burch sandals are actually comfortable. David Yurman rings are beautiful. My point though, is that to fit in here and call this place your home, you do not have to own these material things.

Come as you are, you are meant to be here

I want to thank Ole Miss for softening my heart, for encouraging and increasing my relationship with the Lord, for giving me the best friends that lift me up daily, and for changing me.

To the school that yells "Hotty Toddy" at any given moment, I owe a lot to you.

Happy 21st Birthday, Kendal!

Ten reasons why Kendal deserves a great 21st birthday:
1. I really could start and finish the list right here with this one photo because it says enough:
2. Kendal has a heart to love and serve others. She is always there for her friends and has a heart for the Lord. She has influenced me in so many ways and I am so thankful to call her friend.
3. She deserves a great birthday because her mom sadly forgot to give her two L's in her name.. just kidding Kendal_
4. Her school's mascot was a Honeybear.....
5. One of my highlights of spring semester was driving to Passion with Kendal. Although we almost turned around 100 times and thought we were going to join a cult (or something along those lines) we made it through together. And the best part is that we didn't join a cult, we just became closer friends!
6. Speaking of closer friends, Kendal and I are close friends. Even though some people (Bailey, I'm talking about you) thought we weren't and told us every day "You two really should be friends, y'all would get along great." We knew our friendship was real.
7. Kendal is going to be a teacher one day. How cute?! Sorry I ditched you and switched my major, but you are going to be such a great teacher and influence so many little nuggets lives.
8. Because this was her profile picture:
9. She's the best roomie in foreign cities - Atlanta, New York, where shall we go next??
10. I am most thankful for Kendal because of her sweet friendship and words of encouragement. She deserves the best birthday because she treats her friends like they're the best.

I think the world of you and can't wait to celebrate you on this day!
Happy 21st Kendal, you deserve it!

Gatsby Sensation

The Great Gatsby has made quite the comeback in the past year and taken us by storm. Everyone is wishing they lived in the roaring 20's. The soundtrack is always playing on my computer & I will never get tired of Leonardo DiCaprio saying "old sport."
Last week Tri Delt had a Great Gatsby swap with Kappa Sig at Castle Hill.  It felt like a true Jay Gatsby party. Flapper dresses, headbands with feathers, fish nets and short bob wigs filled the dance floor. Everyone looked so dapper and glamorous.

Plus it's a huge bonus that Florence sang a song in the movie

Happy 14th Birthday, Kendall!

14 reasons Kendall deserves a great birthday:
1. She is the original squirrel girl in my life. While I have found my own niche of squirrels at Ole Miss (#blessed by you squirrels), Kendall is always my number one.
2. She's the coolest 14 year old I know. Whether she is doing a round-off backhandspring tuck in a cheer routine or if she is walking around Downtown Franklin in a Lollapalooza shirt, she is way cooler than me. We went to an Ellie Goulding concert together this summer together too.
3. Kendall is one of the funniest people I know. She can do the Kristin Wiig "Gilly" voice and the Target Lady
4. You name a song, she knows all the words. It's a little unreal how quickly she can pick up on things like that.
5. She sends me selfies like this:

6. Next year she will be in high school (I'm old) and I can't wait for her to be a Centennial Cougar. All Cougars deserve great birthdays because we are obviously the best school in Franklin.
7. Kendall is so caring and sweet. She is such a great friend to everyone and an even better sister. If she knows anyone is upset, she wants to fix it immediately.
8. In my eyes she will always be 7.. It was strange for me to type that you're turning 14. When Kendall was younger I like our age difference, then during the awkward stages of my life I didn't like it, and now I appreciate this age difference so much. It's so cool watching this little squirrel girl grow up and I am so thankful to have her as my sister & best friend.
9. Kendall is going to be an Ole Miss Rebel and a DDD dolphin
10. She is beautiful and makes the boys holla!
11. Kendall calls me "Dadoo" and I have probably only heard her call me Chandler a few times in my life.
12. She's way more talented than I ever was at cheerleading
13. Even though when we were younger I would steal all the good Barbie clothes and furniture for my Barbie family, she would still play with me. I guess that's where being the older sisters has it's perks -- the best Barbie accessories and houses
14. She's truly the best little sister I could ever ask for. With her big heart and even bigger smile, I miss her every day being away at school. I love you Kendall and am so glad you were able to spend your birthday weekend here in Oxford with me!

Here's to 14 years of having my best friend
by my side and so many more!

Delta Tribe

Ten reasons why Bid Day was one of the happiest day of the year:
1. We celebrated life and St. Jude

2. We spent so many hours together + bond. It's also the week Ali got to shine as rush chair!
3. Yummy treats like these got delivered to the house
 4. Craft time & making new D's
 5. I mean, does this crew get any better? ^^
 6. 3/5 of the Lollapalooza gang was reunited at the DDD House
 7. It's finally our time as pledge trainers to spend time with the new baby dolphins and love on them.
8. Ann Marie & I were reunited after a week of living apart
 9. One of the happiest moments is when the bid list is read out loud to the chapter at the top of the stairs
 10. All of our babies came swimming home!
Now, let the six weeks as one of the pledge trainers begin!

Inside the walls...

Rush can be a weird thing, right? If you're from the North, you probably don't even know what it is like to be in the South during recruitment week. It's full of decorations, big colorful signs, lots of rush workshops and songs, skits, and even more when getting to know the potential new members. It may seem caddy. You want your house to have the best girls, you want your #1 best friend from high school to come running into your arms on bid day, and you certainly don't want another house to get your favorite girls. What we need to focus on, is that the Lord will put the girls in their right houses, not us.

Here at Ole Miss, we have recruitment week about six weeks into school, unlike most other colleges. At other schools, you go a week early before school starts, rush, and then begin the school year. Ole Miss is lucky to have those six weeks.

During those six weeks we become friends with the girls going through recruitment. The girls see how the sororities act on campus and the members of the sororities can truly create a friendship with the rushees (I know that's not "correct" to call them that, but I didn't know what else to say). Within these six weeks I just experienced, I have met so many new girls that are all incredible and any house would be lucky to have them.

And while all of this is going on six weeks into school, you're balancing your social life, your sorority life, your school work and your family, you become a little overwhelmed. That test might not have gone the way you wanted it to go or your paper might not have reached the full word limit. But I can guarantee you this.. Whatever you were doing that night instead of studying your flashcards for that Anatomy & Physiology test, you will remember. You won't remember that test. If you're painting canvases to give away on Bid Day or if you are having a heart-to-heart with your neighbor in the dorm or DDD House, these are the moments you will remember.

Recruitment brings out the best in everyone, which is hard to believe. Take a look around though. All the houses are about to embark on the one week they have been preparing for since the spring. The recruitment teams specifically chosen by each sorority will get their week to shine and their hard work will pay off.

Amidst the chaos and confusion of rush week, you find happiness, smiles, hugs and tears. Whether it's because your friend didn't go the sorority you thought, or maybe she went your same sorority and you finally get to be sisters, or you're just touched by one of the speeches given during the recruitment rounds, this week is full of so many emotions.

What I love so much about rush is how much it makes me realize how much I love my sorority. Yes, I love the date parties, I love the cute t-shirts we get after each event, and I love walking into the big doors of Tri Delta every day and calling this place home. I love the kitchen staff in the mornings wishing me a happy day and I love how Mr. Kenny bakes you cookies if he knows you are going home to visit your family. I love dance parties in the hallways and I love hearing "Roar" by Katy Perry blast through the house at any given moment.

What I love even more though is the girls inside these walls. The girls I've met here at Tri Delta encourage me to be better every day. To not take "no" for an answer, to encourage me in my walk with the Lord, and to be a shoulder for me to cry on when I come back after a long day.

What I love the most is how much this house has changed me. Looking back at who I was in high school in comparison to now, I am better. The girls in this house taught me how to love one another and be loved on by friends who care. Nothing against my high school friends, but these girls have helped me grow into the person I will become for the rest of my life.

Rush is hectic. I'm not here to tell you it isn't. Some girls get the house of their dreams, while others will be let free from recruitment because the Lord has a bigger & better plan for them. I can't promise you that everyone ends up exactly where they think they are supposed to be.

I can promise you this though. My sorority has impacted me in ways I will always remember and also in ways I probably haven't even seen or realized yet. Behind these walls my life has been rocked and because I know these girls and can call them family, I've been changed for the better.

Tri Delta at Ole Miss has strengthened my relationship with the Lord and led me to pour into other girls. It has taught me to be held accountable, to be there for my friends whenever they need me to be, and to love my friends every day. Walking through these halls I am uplifted by every girl I pass. Whether I am their best friend or just an acquaintance, if I needed anyone in this house, they would be there for me whenever I needed it.

I've always had a hard time explaining what it is like to be inside the walls of Tri Delta, and I still don't feel like I fully expressed what it is like to be a member in this chapter. My mom wasn't in a sorority and sometimes it may seem like my parents just pay the bills. What no one understands is the love inside these walls and you don't really get the full experience unless you're on the inside. It is the strangest, yet most incredible bond.

Tri Delta has changed my life for the better and I hope with these girls going through recruitment this week, they can find a place to call home, just as I did. Whether they come running down Sorority Row, swimming home to Tri Delta, or if they make any other turn to the other eight sorority houses on this campus, everyone ends up where they are supposed to be. The Lord knows where he can use you and make you grow.

Homesickness

Check out my post this week on Hello Perfect about how being homesick is okay. Don't worry, you're not alone!
